Certificate IV in Teaching English to Young Learners (TESOL)
[11121NAT]

The Certificate IV in Teaching English to Young Learners (TESOL) is designed to prepare teachers to support culturally and linguistically diverse young learners as they develop their English-language skills. It brings together essential knowledge of child development, second-language acquisition, TESOL methodologies and culturally responsive teaching, helping teachers understand how young learners acquire language and how culture, age, ability and learning preferences can influence their progress.

Throughout the course, participants develop practical skills in planning, preparing, delivering and reviewing engaging English lessons. They learn how to assess learners’ needs, select age-appropriate teaching methods and resources, and create supportive learning experiences across the key areas of grammar, speaking, listening, reading and writing. The course also explores ways to build learners’ confidence, encourage active participation, address language difficulties and provide constructive feedback.

An important focus of the course is creating classrooms where young learners feel safe, respected and included. Participants reflect on their own cultural perspectives, develop effective communication strategies and learn how to respond sensitively to the needs of learners from different backgrounds. They also explore the legal, ethical and regulatory responsibilities associated with teaching and supervising young learners.

By combining theory, practical teaching activities, observation and reflection, the course supports participants to develop a thoughtful, flexible and learner-centred approach to teaching English to young learners.
