The Certificate IV in TESOL is designed specifically for adults who want to teach English in Australia or overseas. Graduates of this course will have a solid foundation of English teaching skills and be qualified for entry-level teaching positions throughout the world.

It will provide participants with a range of knowledge and skills to:

To attain the Certificate IV in TESOL learners need to complete twelve (12) Units of competency (11 core and 1 elective) as follows:

Core units

  • NAT11245001 Plan and prepare English lessons
    This core unit equips student TESOL teachers with the essential skills to design, sequence, and deliver engaging English lessons. Students explore learning theories, student needs, lesson planning, assessment strategies, and resource development. By the end of the unit, student teachers will be able to confidently create student-centred lessons tailored to a variety of learning styles, language levels, and delivery modes -both online and in-person.
  • NAT11245002 Assist learners to improve pronunciation and speech
    This unit prepares student teachers to guide learners through the sounds, stress, rhythm, and intonation patterns of English. Students explore the phonemic alphabet, features of connected speech, and common pronunciation difficulties. Student teachers develop skills in modelling pronunciation and using resources that improve learners’ spoken clarity and confidence.
  • NAT11245003 Assist learners to learn or improve grammar
    This unit develops the ability to teach English grammar in practical and accessible ways. Student teachers explore sentence structure, word classes, tenses, and typical learner errors. The unit emphasises how to scaffold grammar lessons, model correct usage, and support learners in developing greater fluency and accuracy.
  • NAT11245004 Source and develop resources to support learning
    This unit trains student TESOL teachers to source, adapt, and create high-quality learning materials. Students apply instructional and visual design principles to produce resources that suit a range of ages, levels, and learning preferences. Emphasis is placed on engagement, functionality, and accessibility.
  • NAT11245005 Assist learners develop reading and writing skills
    This unit provides student TESOL teachers with strategies to support learners in developing core literacy skills. The unit covers the full reading and writing process—from decoding and comprehension to structuring and editing written texts. Student teachers learn how to scaffold literacy tasks, identify learner difficulties, and use real-world texts to build confidence and fluency.
  • NAT11245006 Assist learners develop speaking and listening skills
    This unit focuses on building learners’ speaking fluency and listening comprehension. Student teachers assess learner needs and deliver structured, interactive lessons that develop pronunciation, active listening, and conversational confidence. The unit emphasises communicative language teaching and real-life English use.
  • NAT11245007 Assess language learning
    Student TESOL teachers learn how to create, deliver, and evaluate assessments that measure learners’ language development. The unit covers assessment of grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Teachers also explore feedback strategies and test result interpretation to guide future learning.
  • NAT11245008 Apply a range of TESOL methodologies
    This capstone unit integrates everything student teachers have learned. It focuses on learner profiling, curriculum alignment, method selection, and teaching reflection. Student teachers design and deliver comprehensive lesson plans and evaluate their own teaching style and effectiveness.
  • NAT11245009 Assist learners prepare for English language tests
    This unit gives student TESOL teachers the tools to support learners preparing for major proficiency tests like IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, and Cambridge. Teachers learn to design focused lessons, simulate test environments, and guide learners to meet testing goals.
  • NAT11245010 Use computer assisted language learning to assist learners
    This unit introduces student teachers to technology-based tools for language learning. Student teachers explore a range of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) resources to support grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and core skills, and learn how to evaluate and implement them safely and effectively.
  • NAT11245011 Develop and apply knowledge of cultural factors affecting TESOL teachers
    This unit builds intercultural competence. Student teachers reflect on their own cultural perspectives and learn how to manage cultural misunderstandings and differences in the TESOL classroom. The unit also prepares teachers for working overseas and managing culture shock.

  • NAT11245012 Use creative strategies to assist children to learn English
    Student TESOL teachers learn how to energise lessons through creativity. This unit explores how music, drama, games, art, and media can support language acquisition. It also provides strategies for designing fun, purposeful activities for children and teens.
  • NAT11245013 Teach business English
    This unit prepares student TESOL teachers to support learners entering English-speaking workplaces. The focus is on professional communication, including emails, reports, and meeting interactions. Teachers learn to model business conventions and design workplace-relevant activities.
  • TAEDEL511 Facilitate e-learning
    This elective unit prepares student TESOL teachers to confidently facilitate e-learning in a range of online environments. Student teachers explore how to plan and deliver digital lessons, support diverse learners, and use technology to foster inclusive and engaging learning experiences. The unit also covers how to monitor learner progress, respond to technical and content issues, and reflect on practice.
  • NAT11033004 Teach English to young learners
    This unit prepares TESOL student teachers to confidently teach English to children aged 3–13. It explores how children learn differently from adults and equips teachers with the skills and knowledge to create fun, meaningful, and developmentally appropriate English language lessons. The unit covers child development theories, learning styles, classroom management, and strategies to motivate and engage young learners through interactive and creative teaching techniques.
