The Certificate I in Communicative English is designed to provide learners with a basic level of competence in English in order to communicate in simple everyday communications.It will provide participants with a range of knowledge and skills to:
recognise a range of routine vocabulary, grammatical structures and common phrases to read and understand texts and respond both verbally and in writing.
use a limited range of routine vocabulary and apply basic word order, spelling and punctuation conventions to write a range of basic formal and informal texts.
recognise the different sounds of English, demonstrate understanding of spoken language, comprehend and answer simple questions, and participate in basic English language transactions.
identify and reproduce the different sounds of English, distinguish syllables, and use intonation, rhythm and stress to participate in a range of basic formal and informal English transactions.
use grammatical terms, compose basic grammatical structures and apply basic grammatical concepts in routine English transactions.
produce the different sounds/phonemes, vowel and consonant blends, to pronounce words and short utterances, to assist communication in routine English language transactions.

Learners will identify the purpose, context, and audience of texts, respond to requests for personal information, and follow written instructions and directions. They will also answer questions about short texts, take notes on key points, and interpret simple tables, graphs, and illustrations.
NAT11116002 Develop and use basic writing skills This unit develops learners' ability to write for different purposes, contexts, and audiences. It covers informal writing, short recounts, and clear instructions using proper grammar, structure, and tone. Learners will also refine their writing through self-correction and feedback, enhancing communication skills for everyday and workplace settings.
NAT11116003 Develop and use basic listening skills This unit develops listening skills for understanding purpose, context, and key details in spoken texts. Learners will answer questions, take notes, engage in conversations, relay information, and follow simple instructions, enhancing communication in everyday and workplace settings.
NAT11116004 Develop and use basic speaking skills This unit develops learners' speaking skills for different purposes, contexts, and audiences. Learners will engage in simple conversations, using appropriate vocabulary, grammar, and non-verbal cues. They will give clear instructions, request clarification, and recount personal experiences in chronological order. Emphasis is placed on intelligibility, coherence, and effective communication in everyday interactions.
NAT11116005 Apply grammar skills to assist spoken and written communication This unit develops learners' understanding and use of basic grammar for effective communication. Learners will recognise and apply parts of speech, use simple grammatical structures, and distinguish between phrases, clauses, and sentences. They will also compose simple and compound sentences, form questions, and use discourse markers and sequencing words to connect ideas clearly.
NAT11116006 Use pronunciation skills to assist communication This unit develops learners' pronunciation skills by focusing on English sounds, syllables, stress, intonation, and connected speech. Learners will practice accurate pronunciation using phonemic symbols, pronunciation rules, and digital tools while applying self-correction techniques for improvement.
NAT11116007 Apply language skills for numeracy This unit develops essential mathematical and language skills for calculations, measurements, and expressing time, dates, temperature, and currency.
