The Certificate III in Functional English for Study or Employment is designed to provide learners with a more comprehensive level of competence in English in order to communicate on a higher level in routine day-to-day interactions.

It will provide participants with a range of knowledge and skills to:

  • read lecture notes, critically analyse academic articles in textbooks, journals and websites, and follow guidelines and instructions for academic purposes.
  • take notes from lectures, presentations and academic articles, write reports and essays, and use paraphrasing and referencing in academic writings.
  • use effective listening strategies and techniques to decipher both content and subject matter in lectures and presentations.
  • speak clearly and confidently using correct pronunciation, academic vocabulary and useful expressions.
  • participate successfully in conversations and small group discussions and communicate information logically to deliver effective presentations.
  • use more complex cohesive and coherent grammatical structures, to identify and correct grammatical errors.
  • pronounce multi-syllabic words, recognise and use connected speech, and apply stress and intonation patterns to change meaning.
  • use the International Phonemic Alphabet to identify and produce sounds, and identify your own areas of difficulty.
  • research employment positions, prepare resumes and participate in interviews in an English-speaking environment.
  • use strategies for prioritisation, managing time and taking notes effectively, undertake research and revise lesson content.
